Editorial Review:
Makes 2 quarts of fresh soft-consistency ice cream or other frozen dessert. (Note: Soft ice cream can be hardened in an airtight container in the freezer for 2 to 4 hours.) The KitchenAid ice cream maker attachment's 2-quart capacity offers the largest stand mixer attachment bowl capacity in the industry, and its open design allows for easy addition of ingredients.

Summary: Fantastic product!!
Comment: I LOVE this ice cream maker! Very easy to use and the end result is perfection and rivals some of the most expensive ice cream out there.

I was actually worried about buying this after reading some of the reviews but figured I would give it a try anyway.

First thing I would suggest is be sure you have some good ice cream recipes to use. Ice cream is only as good as what the recipe calls for and it's not the ice cream makers fault if the recipe wasn't good to begin with. Personally I got Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert book after seeing someone else suggest it. Great book!

Second thing I noticed were complaints that the ice cream was only "soft serve consistency". Very true! The ice cream maker only starts the process but you do need to freeze it for a few additional hours for it to finish firming up. Nothing unusual with that and my other ice cream maker required the same method. Alcohol can also cause freezing issues as well.

Third I did see complaints about there not being a lid for the bowl. If you read the instructions they specifically tell you NOT to store ice cream in the maker since the utensils you use to scoop it out could damage the surface. I am sure they did not provide a lid just so people wouldn't try doing just that and then complaining later. If you are worried that food crumbs might get in the bowl while you are freezing it you might want to cover the top with foil. I simply set the bowl near the top of my chest freezer and haven't had any problems. It's also easier to grab when I want to make ice cream.

I have the Kitchen Aid Professional 600 and found that setting up was fast and easy. I know some people had issues with the drive assembly staying on but haven't experienced that problem for myself. Once the drive assembly is in place and the dasher is engaged I have no idea how the assembly might fall off as some complained. I have a feeling that either they are using an old mixer and the attachment doesn't work with it or they didn't read the instructions very well.

Summary: Best easy ice cream
Comment: I bought the mixer so I could use this ice cream maker. I also got the Ben & Jerry's recipe book and this makes perfect ice cream with no effort. The ice cream doesn't even develop ice crystals when frozen. You will not be dissapointed.

Summary: chad
Comment: Product works as advertised; however, preparing the ingredients is quite time consuming. Unit must sit in freezer overnight before using, and the ingredients must be chilled at least eight hours before making the ice cream.

Summary: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
Comment: I bought this thinking how cool it would be to use our brand new kitchen aid to make ice cream and that I would use this all the time and that was almost 2 years ago and I have only used it once! For one thing it takes an extensive amount of time to prepare the unit to use it. You have to put the bowl in the freezer (if you have room that is) for at least 12 hours to allow the bowl to be frozen and than you can put it on your Kitchen Aid and you let it run for about 15 min with the ice cream mixture than its back into the freezer with the bowl to allow the ice cream to harden. Although it looks nice to me it was a waste of money. I would have been better off buying a Ice Cream Maker for half the price.

Summary: Best IceCream Maker Ever!
Comment: I read the reviews of this product and almost didn't buy it. But, don't be mislead -- this is the best ice cream maker we have ever used. Twenty odd years ago we had a salt based hand cranked ice cream maker which we traded for an electric salt-based model. Then we bought a Rival--worked well, but we had to rig extension cords to keep it in the freezer while we made ice cream.
Using the French Vanilla recipe in the instructions, we just made the best ice cream ever with the lowest input of labor. There is no problem adding ingredients. We make ice cream about twice a month, so we feel qualified to comment. The ice cream maker was easy to set up and use -- and most importantly, it works. You may want to allow 40 minutes rather than the 20 to 30 suggested to make fabulous ice cream.
