Editorial Review:
Zojirushi Fresh Brew Coffee Maker EC-BD15 features a 1.5 liter stainless steel vacuum insulated carafe with excellent keep-warm performance for fresh tasting coffee. Unlike other coffee makers with a burner that quickly bitters the taste of coffee, the Fresh Brew Stainless Steel Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker comes with a stainless steel thermal carafe that keeps the coffee hot for hours without altering the taste. It also features an electric timer clock module to set the coffee to complete brewing by the desired time.
Lots of folks dislike the burnt flavor that coffee gets when it sits in a glass pot over a heating element. To avoid this, coffee shops often brew right into large thermal pots to keep the coffee warm without it becoming overcooked. The Zojirushi Fresh Brew does that, too, but in home-sized batches. It looks great, too, with a glossy black body and stainless steel carafe and brew basket.

To brew, lift the lid and swing the water outlet spout to one side while the filter is being loaded; the spout will return to its proper position when the lid is closed. A small red ball in the water gauge makes it extra simple to read. And an electronic clock module also serves as a timer that will start the brewer at a specified time. The carafe's lid is designed to be on during brewing, with a small cap to help keep the heat in after it's ready. The Fresh Brew also has a pause-and-serve function that stops the flow for 30 seconds while a cup of coffee is served.

To clean the brewer unit, use a solution of white vinegar and water, following the instructions in the accompanying booklet. The unit is not immersible. The exterior can be wiped with a damp soft rag; do not use abrasives or scouring pads. The filter reservoir is removable; clean with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. The coffee brewer measures 15 by 12 by 9 inches (includes carafe handle when unit is completely assembled), and it uses #3 cone-shaped disposable paper filters. The Fresh Brew comes with a detailed instruction booklet. Zojirushi guarantees its products with a one-year limited warranty. --Garland Withers

Summary: Zojirushi 10 cup coffee maker - not all it was hyped to be
Comment: Researched this product pretty well, and it got high marks - even on Consumer Reports. Bought to replace Cuisinart 12 cup thermal, which was the second one of that model I had. Cuisinart just stopped working - first one was returned for a new one but I couldn't find the paperwork when the second went after about 6 months so I decided to try something else. Didn't need one that grinds beans, did want the thermal carafe, wanted another 12 cup, and one that didn't seem to take up much counter space. The Zojirushi seemed to need twice as much coffee as the Cuisinart to make it strong enough. The carafe didn't keep the coffee as warm for as long. Top hard to put on and remove. No indication - a light or noise - when coffee was done. Separate issue - purchased from VeryAsia thru Amazon. My fault I didn't notice that their return policy is very strict and they only take back items that have not been used at all. I erroneously assumed because of the price, the company would want their customers to be completely happy with their purchases. Guess not. So I boxed up the Zojirushi and will store in my garage - went out an bought another Cuisinart and the Zojirushi can be used in the interim if and went the new Cuisinart stops working and I have to go out and get another one. I don't even want to give it as a gift.

Summary: Not that impressed
Comment: It's hard to rate this on its own merits. I had a cuisinart for three years and keep comparing this coffee maker to that one.
The Zojirushi's thermal carafe is smaller than I would have liked and its very cumbersome to open- maybe once its broken in a little more it will be easier. There is this weird little "cap" that I assume goes in the top to help keep the coffee warm- it doesn't work very well because the coffee wasn't as hot as my Cuisinart (that stayed scalding hot almost all day). I'm not crazy about having another "thing" to wash and store and otherwise keep track of. It didn't come with a manual...warranty info...just the coffee maker. And the box was torn open inside the Amazom shipping box. Not just a little tear- the whole side was torn from the top to the bottom (didn't anybody notice when they packed it?). It does look nice and is apparently easy to program and use- I did it without the benefit of an instruction manual. Will buy another Cuisinart.

Summary: A Good Machine
Comment: I bought my Zojirushi machine a month ago and so far so good. (I say this as my husband and I seem to have bad coffee machine karma, always breaking them.) I gave it 4 not 5 stars because the coffee filter area is a little difficult to use. Filter has to be tangled with a bit to get it in and the arm that dispenses water has to be moved away and then back to position.

Makes good tasting coffee. One warning--there is a cap on top of pot that must be removed before brewing. It gets put on after coffee is made to keep it hot. Sounds obvious, but I screwed up and had it on (fortunately for only a minute) the first pot I brewed.

Summary: Fantastic Coffee Maker
Comment: Just got this for Xmas, it is a great coffee maker. No more replacing glass carafes, I manage to break one a year cleaning them. The coffee stays warm for hourse in the steel carafe and the burnt taste that comes with keeping coffee on a burner is no longer an issue. Makes a great tasting cup of coffee, sorry Starbucks and Peets.

Summary: Cheap! Cheap! Cheap!!
Comment: I am SO disappointed with this coffee maker!! I was really looking forward to getting this so when it showed up at 6:30pm I said I was making a pot! Taking it out of the box I found a cheap plastic machine, but didn't want to jump to any conclusions until the coffee was made. Well, I couldn't open the carafe to get the coffee out and it took me about 4-5 mins to drain the contents . I am really shocked at all the rave reviews that were listed for this maker. My FREE Gevalia maker makes this look like a Wal-Mart special! I'm going to be shaking my head on this one for some time.
