Comment: I am 50+ and loved these books as much as my 8 yr old niece. Who would've thought a current day preteen could be faced with dealing with ancient Greek mythological gods?!? And to be enthralling reading to boot! This is not at all like Harry Potter; BUT, if you enjoy HP, you'll enjoy Percy Jackson. It helps to be familiar with Greek mythology before reading about Percy; but you can definitely learn as you go without feeling like you are.
Pick it up, start reading and I bet you will not want to stop!

Comment: My 4th grade son who does not love to read absolutely loves this series. I can't get him to stop reading; he is reading instead of TV, video games, outside, etc. I read a few chapters of each of the 4 and they are well written, funny, and full of action/adventure. Great books!
